In water supply projects, CD drills laterals to the point of delivery from the central distribution point to the point of delivery. By drilling up to 3 miles (4 kilometers) from the central water supply plant, the CD base station can supply water to over 7 square miles of urban area.
In wastewater collection, CD laterals are drilled from the collection point, usually a wastewater treatment facility, and duplex grinder pumps at th point of local collection are used to pump wastewater back to the treatment plant.
Electrical grids have been remarkably fragile in environments from hurricanes, floods and and tornados, to wild fires. CD laterals are able to adress’last mile’ distribution underground with extraordinary efficiency, making systems resiliant and capable of efficient service before, during and after outages.
Microgrids are a nearly perfect application for Civil Drilling. From a central solar and battery system location, the entire secondary grid can be constructed to buuild a resilisnt and redundent electrical gird.
Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP) systems are advance heat exchange systems that pump water down to pick up heat at ambient temperature when heating is required, and pump water up (return) when cooling is required. Underlying the efficiency of this system is that ambient temperature below ground is generally in the 45 ° -50 ° F range in northern latitudes, and in the 50 ° -70 ° F range in the south for the US. With fluid heat exchangers and then fluid to air HE, these GSHP systems are extremely enrgy efficient and the non-moving parts of the system can last over 100 years.
District Heating Systems are becoming an increasingly important means of reducing carbon fired central plant emmissions within the existing utility grid. Combined with Absorption Chillers, District systems can provide both heating and cooling utilizing waster heat from the electrical generation process. Even better – District Heating works with the Gates Foundation funded Heliogen system – an effective near-zero heating and cooling solution for the 21st century.
Aquifer recharge is the process of injecting frfesh water into undergorund aquifers to store water and/or improve well efficiency in areas where wells are primarily the source of fresh water.
